Frequently Asked Questions

Installation

  • Why does the installer abort with an error message about a missing file?

You have to extract all files in the ZIP package to a directory before running the setup.

  • Why does the installer abort, telling me that FS could not be found on my system, although it is installed?

Probably the registry entry containing the FS installation path is missing on your system for some reason. There are free utilities available for restoring it from TweakFS (FS9 Registry Utility, FSX Registry Utility).

  • FSX hangs sometimes/always on startup after installing FS Recorder for FSX, how do I fix that?

  • FS2004 is crashing to desktop if I try to play a recorded flight as AI traffic.

If the flight was recorded with a helicopter, see the question about helicopters below. If the flight was recorded with an add-on aircraft, try to use Play as Traffic with a flight recorded with one of the default aircraft (e.g. the Cessna); if that works, the add-on aircraft cannot be used as AI traffic, you have to use a different aicraft.

General questions

  • Can I play the .frc files recorded with FS Recorder with a video player?

No, the recordings can only be played inside FS using FS Recorder.

  • Is it possible to convert .frc files recorded with FS Recorder into video files?

No, a direct conversion is not possible. The .frc files contain only flight data, like aircraft position, velocity, etc., which is used by FS Recorder to replay the flight in FS. There is no graphics data in the files, so there's nothing to create a video from.
Creating a video from a recorded flight is only possible by playing back the recording with FS Recorder and at the same time capturing a video with a screen capturing software (e.g. FRAPS, Game Cam, ...).
A new FS Recorder feature to render smooth videos of recorded flights is currently in development, for more info and a preview release see this forum topic.

  • In what format does FS Recorder save recorded flights?

The recorded flights are saved in FS Recorder's own binary file format with the extension .frc. The FRC converters, which are available for download (v1.3)/included in the package (v2), allow a conversion of flight data to/from text files.

  • Is there a description of FS Recorder's .frc file format available?

Currently only a description of the FS Recorder 1.3 file format is available; FS Recorder 2.x uses a completely redesigned file format, a description might become available if there is demand for it.
The v1.3 format description can be downloaded in the developers forum. Access to the developers forum is granted on request only. To get access, register a forum account (if you don't already have one), and send an email or private message with a short description why you are interested in the file format to me.

  • Can I play recordings of helicopter flights as AI traffic?

The FS AI system does not support helicopters. Trying to play a recording made with a helicopter usually results in a crash to desktop in FS9, in FSX the aircraft just doesn't appear.
However, some users found a workaround for that limitation, it is described in the topic HOW TO play helicopters as AI traffic.

  • How do I access FS Recorder cameras in FSX?

In FSX the FS Recorder cameras are realized using three custom FSX cameras (called FS Recorder VC/Tower/Spot). First switch to one of these custom cameras (using the FSX views menu or the 'S' and 'A' keys), then you can create, delete and cycle through FS Recorder cameras as in FS2004 (see Camera Features in the manual for futher details).

  • Is there a version of FS Recorder for Prepar3D?

Currently there is no FS Recorder version for Prepar3D. See this forum post for further information.

  • Is there a version of FS Recorder for FSX Steam edition?

Currently there is no FS Recorder version for FSX Steam edition. See this forum post for further information.
